Dr Vera Pickering – BVSc (Hons)

Veterinarian

Vera grew up in Adelaide and moved to Sydney to attend Sydney University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1974.

After working in a few veterinary practices along the northern beaches, she soon bought into Mona Vale Veterinary Hospital in 1977 (at this stage, MVVH was just a one vet practice).Vera then bought a veterinary practice in Avalon in 1982 and set this up as a branch practice. Soon after, in 1988, Vera was one of the founding members of Northside Emergency Veterinary Service (NEVS). In amongst all of this, she had a working holiday to Fiji where she helped in a community project to help reduce the overpopulation of feral cats through a desexing program.

Vera built up Mona Vale Vets into the busy practice it is today and is recognised as being one of the pillars of the veterinary community on the Northern Beaches. Her many years of treating paralysis tick cases has made her somewhat of an expert in this field. She handed over the ownership reigns to Dr’s Anne, Jenny and Alison in 2012 but still continues to be actively involved in the life of MVVH and consults on Tuesday’s.

Her current veterinary interests include animal behaviour – how best to create and maintain a happy and harmonious human and animal bond in our busy family lives. Vera is also very involved in the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) helping to mentor Veterinary Science students and support the veterinary community through continuing education and communication.

Having lessened her veterinary workload, Vera has loaded her timetable up with fun and creative things – She has always loved sailing on Pittwater and is part of a regular weekday crew and now has more time to enjoy walking. She loves cooking, reading and the theatre and she has recently taken up watercolour painting. All of these activities are enhanced by listening to music – especially Jazz and Latin.

Vera has 2 daughters, Tania is a paediatric neuropsychologist and Claudia, an architect who is making comedy movies on the side. Her current pet family includes Bobby the Boxer, Jai the Golden Retriever, 2 cats Louis & Archie, and 8 chickens.
